Why Literacy

Why Literacy?

Worldwide, close to 1 billion people are illiterate or functionally illiterate. Illiterate people are often locked into a perpetual, intergenerational chain of poverty that affects every aspect of their lives. Books, libraries, educations, and programs that promote literacy break the cycle of poverty, while providing children with the tools to better their own lives and communities and enhancing the understanding of other cultures around the world, thus also promoting peace.

The World is Just a Book Away believes in building leaders for the future by empowering children and their communities to change their own lives and the world at large. We promote literacy and education by developing libraries and programs that plant the seeds of leadership, environmental consciousness, and community connection.

Although WIJABA has achieved great success in promoting literacy in its first three years, there is still so much more to do, with hundreds of millions of children worldwide who have never experienced the joy, possibilities, and hope provided by books. It is WIJABAs intention to play an important role in eradicating illiteracy.

Please join us in this quest by investing in the future of children now (donate button). School by school, library by library, and book by book, we truly can change the lives of children by bringing the light of books and learning into their lives.
